SEXUAL ABUSE: AUTHOR OF REPORT SPEAKS OUT  (STANDARD, CHURCH/RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS)

The Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa, known also as White Sisters, issued a press release to shed light on the report of sexual abuse against sisters, denounced by the National Catholic Reporter. The General Superior, Sister Marie McDonald, involved as the author of the document quoted in the article, underlined that neither she nor any other sister of her congregation ever supplied information, documents or released interviews of any kind to the National Catholic Reporter. Adding that the document was prepared in close consultation with Congregations of Religious and National Conferences in Africa, for private meetings between men and women Superiors General (UISG/USG) as part of on-going deliberations on various aspects of religious life and that the sexual abuse of women was presented as one among other problems facing the Church at this time. SisterMarie also took care in presenting the whole context, expressing deep appreciation and gratitude for all the good being effected by the Church and Religious Life, pointing out that the majority of clergy and religious live integrated and evangelically fruitful lives. In which regard she also drew attention to the Bishops, priests and religious, who in recent years have shed their blood for Christ’s cause and for the people committed to their care. The statement of the White Sisters concludes emphasising that it is unknown how the National Catholic Reporter gained access to the document and that it was published without authorisation or knowledge of Sister Marie.
